CDC reports that 6 people die of Alcohol Poisoning every day

In a new report yesterday, the CDC stated that an average of six people die of alcohol poisoning each day in the United States. Binge drinking college students are not in the majority.  Three out of four, or 76 percent, of poisoning deaths are among adults ages 35 to 64 and about 76 percent of them are men.

The CDC based the findings on statistics taken from 2010 to 2012. The report states, “Alcohol poisoning is caused by drinking large quantities of alcohol in a short period of time. very high levels of alcohol in the body can shutdown critical areas of the brain that control breathing, heart rate, and body temperature, resulting in death. Alcohol poisoning deaths affect people of all ages but are most common among middle-aged adults and men.”

As moms and wives what can we do about this? If we believe that our husband, boyfriend, brother or father has a drinking problem the best thing we can do is have the courage to speak up.  Talk to your loved one about your concerns.

The CDC believes that the government needs to have more regulation on alcohol to decrease binge drinking. However, I believe that through education at the local level we can lower the statistics.  Doctors can talk to their patients about the consequences of binge drinking and how much alcohol is too much.

Everyone can follow these guidelines to prevent alcohol poisoning:

Don’t start drinking or increase the amount you drink on the basis of potential health benefits If you choose to drink, do so in moderation – up to 1 drink a day for women or up to 2 drinks a day for men.

Milo’s birthday was a whole family sick day. Blah.

Just in time for Milo’s birthday, we had the misfortune of having a whole family sick Day. I don’t think I’ve ever had that before, even as a kid. Consequently, I got to do some up-close research about how to make an at-home sick day fun.

There’s TV
We tapped into the Netflix screens on our AppleTV for some hard-core kids programming. Our family viewed the new Lorax film together (mixed reviews but it passed the time), some old Thomas the tank Engine shows, curious George, and even Mickey Mouse. Netflix has a kids area with “view by character” to make it easy for sick and exhausted parents and kids to navigate into the good stuff.

Don’t forget napping
My absolute favorite time of the day was when we all took a 90-minute nap. Everyone! Me, Alec, the toddler, and the two grade schoolers all sleeping at the same time. because we’re all home to rest up and get better, I like to schedule in one much more nap than everyone typically takes. We don’t want this “sick day” to get the credibility of a party day.

Toys that let us be still
For my 18 month old, I pulled out toys that didn’t involve a lot of action. We opened a box of finger puppets and were silly while sitting still on the floor. sitting at the table is also good. little men can do play-doh. My birthday young boy thoroughly folded paper airplanes from this book of star Wars flyers he got for his birthday.

What didn’t work as well was the freaking pogo stick I purchased Milo for his birthday. A pogo stick!! #sickdayfail

Ready for much more screen time?
Speaking of being still, because mommy was not up for reading kids’ books (over and over), I let YouTube read to my child. I didn’t outsource the cuddling. After Susan Sarandon read us both Goodnight Moon, I brought Sawyer back upstairs for nap two.

Bonus points for balloons
Because it was a birthday sick day and not just any old sick day, I used taskrabbit as a home delivery service to bring us some balloons and beverages. Sawyer and Milo loved them.

I’ve taken children through the mechanics of scales and quarters notes and half rests and made the introductions to beautiful music. However, I realize that my hands are partially tied if the parent is not involved in encouraging that love for music in their child.

When a student pertains to my home for the first time, I ask them if they have something they can play for me. They’ll look at me quizzically considering that they’ve never had a lesson before. I get a feel for which students will be a success when they give me a shy smile and say, “Well, I kind of made up this song.” This doesn’t normally happen if they’ve never been allowed to touch the piano before.

With my own children, here are a few things we do to encourage the love of music in our home:

Get them involved. As we sit in church, I tap my baby‘s hands to the rhythm of the music as soon as they can sit on my lap. I don’t know if it actually makes a difference in their musical knowledge, but it sure makes them take pleasure in the worship service. I encourage my children to “play” our piano whenever they are interested. Our only policies are not during mealtimes or quiet times and only play with fingers (trust me that this policy is born of experience!). My brother and I used to sit on the front seat of church with a toy guitar and a keyboard with volume on low and play along with the music. This gave us confidence we needed and we still play today…except we have real instruments now that are even connected to the sound system!

Give them lessons. Not everyone can afford private lessons especially with multiple children. However, this is one item we budget even at small sacrifice. If they learn enough to play for themselves, they will take pleasure in music for a lifetime.

Make it a family activity. I have fond memories of road trips when the miles melted away as we sang every song we knew. This is how we learned harmony, though we didn’t know it at the time considering that we were having so much fun. My husband’s family likes to sit around and play guitars together. In our house, we often play a song and “act it out” by tiptoeing during soft parts, “dancing” swiftly to fast parts and hopping on staccato notes.

This gave us confidence we needed and we still play today…except we have real instruments now that are even connected to the sound system!

Give them lessons. Not everyone can afford private lessons especially with multiple children. However, this is one item we budget even at small sacrifice. If they learn enough to play for themselves, they will take pleasure in music for a lifetime.

Make it a family activity. I have fond memories of road trips when the miles melted away as we sang every song we knew. This is how we learned harmony, though we didn’t know it at the time considering that we were having so much fun. My husband’s family likes to sit around and play guitars together. In our house, we often play a song and “act it out” by tiptoeing during soft parts, “dancing” swiftly to fast parts and hopping on staccato notes.

Outbreak of Measles in Disneyland raises issue about parents Not Vaccinating

On January 21, 2015, Dr. Ron Chapman, director of the California department of Public health (CDPH), confirmed 59 cases of measles in his state because the end of December, 2014. 42 of those cases were linked to an initial exposure in December at Disneyland or Disney California adventure Park in Anaheim, California.

In 1912, measles became a nationally known disease in the United States. Physicians were required to report all diagnosed cases. during the first decade of reporting the disease, roughly 6,000 measles related deaths were reported each year. before the vaccine became available (1963), nearly every child in the united states got the measles. It has been estimated that 3 to 4 million people in the united states were infected each year. also every year an estimated 400 to 500 people died, 48,000 were hospitalized, and 4,000 suffered encephalitis (swelling of the brain) from measles(source CDC.gov).

The only way to avoid children from getting the measles is by vaccinating them. By 2000, measles was declared eliminated in the United States. This was due to a very highly effective vaccination program. The recent measles outbreak occurred because parents are choosing not to vaccinate their kids. They are believing a myth spread by actress and author, Jenny Mccarthy, that vaccines are linked to autism.

About 1 percent of the world’s population has autism. but it is not due to vaccinations. This link is completely false.

I have two children on the autism spectrum. I do not believe that their autism was due to the fact that they are vaccinated. I would rather have them be on the spectrum than die from a disease that has been eradicated for decades. Please vaccinate your kids. You might save the lives of thousands of children and certainly the life of your child or daughter.
